WOOD-PECKERS
The International Ornithological Congress (IOC) recognizes 236 species of woodpeckers which make up the family Picidae (listed below). They are distributed among 35 genera, six of which have only one species.
To hammer into wood, the woodpecker’s head strikes tree trunks with at least 1,000 times the force of gravity (1,000 g), yet the bird suffers no apparent harm, thanks to several adaptations allowing amazing shock-absorbing capability.
To feed from these excavations, a curving complex of cartilage and bone within a woodpecker’s head allows the bird to extend and store its exceptionally long tongue.
Pikado was named after the black-backed woodpecker (pic à dos noir; pictured above), a burnt-forest specialist inhabiting boreal forests of North America. The logo was designed based on the European great spotted woodpecker (pic épeiche; pictured left).
